Twenty-six runners ≥29 yr old supplemented omega-3 fatty acid (OMEGA group, n = 14; 2234 mg of EPA and 916 mg of DHA daily) or MCT as placebo (MCT group, n = 12; 4000 mg of MCT daily) during 12 wk of endurance training. Before and after intervention, blood samples were collected for O3I assessment and an incremental test to exhaustion and a 1500-m run trial were performed.
Results: O3I was significantly increased in the OMEGA group (from 5.8% to 11.6%, P < 0.0001).
A significant increase in V˙O2peak was observed in the OMEGA group (from 53.6 ± 4.4 to 56.0 ± 3.7 mL·kg−1⋅min−1, P = 0.0219) without such change in MCT group (from 54.7 ± 6.8 to 56.4 ± 5.9 mL·kg−1⋅min−1, P = 0.1308). A positive correlation between the change in O3I and the change in running economy was observed when data of participants from both groups were combined (−0.1808 ± 1.917, P = 0.0020), without such an effect in OMEGA group alone (P = 0.1741). No effect of omega-3 supplementation on 1500-m run results was observed.
Conclusions: Twelve weeks of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation at a dose of 2234 mg of EPA and 916 mg of DHA daily during endurance training resulted in the improvement of O3I and running economy and increased VO2peak without improvement in the 1500-m run trial time in amateur runners.
Testosterone and cortisol are classic anabolic and catabolic hormones, with a bidirectional relationship. Low-carbohydrate diets may affect these hormones, however individual studies show conflicting results. Therefore, we conducted a review to settle the controversy. The results indicated that low-carbohydrate diets cause a short-term increase in cortisol over the first couple of weeks, after which levels appear to return to baseline. This may be part of the adaption process to such diets, and non-pathological. Also, the results suggested that very high-protein diets may decrease testosterone, possibly in an effort to upregulate the urea cycle and increase nitrogen excretion. Although, this finding only applied to very high-protein diets, with protein intakes roughly three times the average person's. Caffeine and taurine are the two primary performance enhancing ingredients found in energy drinks. The number of emergency department visits involving energy drinks doubled over the past five years. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of three different energy drinks on cardiovascular and performance measures. Fifteen recreational runners completed five trials. The first trial consisted of a graded exercise protocol. The 4 remaining trials consisted of 15-minute economy trials at a treadmill speed consistent with 70% of subject's V̇O2max. An hour before subjects ingested 1 of the 3 energy drinks or a placebo. HR, BP, V̇O2, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded during the 15-minute trial. In the podcast I discuss the findings and implications for athletes, uncontrolled environments and more. Although there is much literature demonstrating weight manipulation methods, minimal research exists analyzing how much weight MMA athletes lose prior to the official weigh-in. Moreover, there is minimal research examining how much weight professional MMA athletes gain between the official weigh-in and competition. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to analyze weight loss/regain in professional MMA athletes. Data collected from 616 professional MMA athletes (31.1 ± 4.0 yrs.; 177.1 ± 4.7 cm) competing for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) between 2020 and 2022 were used for the study. The athlete’s weight was obtained 72 h, 48 h, and 24 h prior to the official weigh-in, at the official weigh-in, and prior to competition. Random effects analysis was utilized to compare weight at a variety of time points between different weight classes. All statistics were analyzed, and significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. There is a significant (p ≤ 0.05) difference between weight classes and time points in professional MMA. MMA athletes decrease body weight significantly prior to the official weigh-in. MMA athletes increase body weight significantly between official weigh-in and competition.
